| Once abundant, the population of Yellowhammers in the United
Kingdom has declined by over 50% in the last 25 years. It is a bird of open
country especially arable land and its decline has been linked to modern
agricultural methods. It eats seeds and insects and can be tempted into
the garden in winter when supplies in the country are short. The males in
breeding plumage has a yellow head, breast and under-parts, a chestnut rump
and white outer tail feathers. Females are similar but much duller as are
young birds. |
